I know that the academic version is available to teachers and students.
Does anyone know if that includes retired teachers??

Interesting question, to be sure.

But I am still looking for an answer to my original post...Can a retired
teacher legally purchase the Academic version of Office XP??

You may not be in a position to buy an academic version; these are usually
marketed directly to schools. If you're talking about Office XP for Students
and Teachers, see
http://www.microsoft.com/office/forstudents/default.asp#qualify and
http://www.microsoft.com/office/forstudents/qeu.asp.

I was in Wal-Mart yesterday and lo and behold, on the shelf: Office XP
Academic. It states in the license agreement that you must be a full or part
time student, or a full or part-time instructor to be in compliance with it.

Most of the additional templates that come with that program are available
for download direct from Microsoft. Other than that, I'm not certain what
differences there are.

Not just a student or teacher, either, but a K-12 student or teacher. And
some stores at least do actually check your credentials before selling it to
you.

Appreciate the backup as always.
