Bit off topic, but figured I would get a good sample of responses. I
have a month LAN party, and we were thinking of adding a game to the mix to
change up the first person shooter monotony. I downloaded the demo for Need
For Speed Underground, but it doesn't give a good representation of
online/LAN play.

So, those of you who have NFSU2, how is the LAN play? Is it suitable
for 4 - 8 players racing against each other?

TIA

You'd be better off using NFS : Underground 1.

Unless they patched it (I've not looked for a while) or my memory is
completely failing me, the NFS:U1 online mode was dreadful (in that you
couldn't arrange matches with specific people, you had to use the EA
matchmaking service) and the LAN play was non-existent.

Did they change this?

If so I'll have to dig my copy out and get it patched...

Hmm.. no I don't think they patched it for that. The online componet
was kinda screwy now that you mention it. Never tried LAN so not sure.
I was just thinking underground would be easier to 'get into' then the
new one where you have to find each new shop as you play.

I was at a LAN last weekend with friends. There was 6 of us and we played
nfsu 2. It rocked to put it simply. We had a blast racing one another. Bear
in mind the only race mode that allows 6 players is the U.R.L. ones. The
normal drag, drift, sprint and circuit have a max of 4 cars. There wasnt any
lag and it ran smooth on all the PCs there.

Thanks for that. I am pretty much unfamiliar with the game, what is are
the U.R.L. races? Would you say the multiplayer would be easy for someone
not familiar with the game to pick up and play?

No, some damed fast players on-line.
I managed to beat the computer OK, but on-line I get slaughtered.

'Realism is seductive because once you have accepted the reasonable
notion that you should base your actions on reality, you are too often
led to accept, without much questioning, someone else's version of what
that reality is. It is a crucial act of independent thinking to be
skeptical of someone else's description of reality.'-

Well, my goal is to simply limit racers to those who are on the LAN, and
let those at the LAN party race each other ... all of which would have the
same experience level.

I personally kinda miss the old "catch up" option (e.g. folks behind had
little more power and/or control etc.) in the race games. Least then when
you crashed you weren't outright "out of it" which seems to be the case with
most recent racers.
