Sorry to be off topic, but you are a knowledgeable lot.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a newsgroup that will help me in my
endeavour to build a PC from scratch? I have got info from the web but would
like a bit of personal advice from people who have experience of this kind
of thing.

Thanks,
Dave.

John,

You probably don't realize this but Outlook Express strips the OT: from
the subject header. Any text with a colon afterwards is stripped.
This is a known bug. You may want to consider this for future replies
you make to OT: posts.

doesn't on mine.

strange....I never noticed this...

why does this happen... and how to correct this?

What about Re: why doesn't it strip that colon?

I must look into this.. strange... lol

I personally use OT with a parenthesis or bracket...

I have some suggestions for you:

1) If you insist on using OE consider OE-Quotefix as an add-on that
adds some other functionality. It even makes bottom-posting available
if you choose to use that.
2) Consider a different newsreader. I migrated from OE to Xananews
and have never looked back.
3) Put the OT: back in the subject line like I just did.

The bat ?

Xananews is ok.. but still not good enough for me to make the change
permanently....

why does this happen...

This bug was deliberately introduced as a workaround for another bug
they deliberately introduced. By default, many non-English versions
of OE don't use the standard "Re:", instead using some other
letters. There are many, but the only ones I recall are "AW:" and
"SV:". I believe in more recent versions, default behavior is to
use "Re:".

A side effect of that deliberate bug was that after a few
replies, a Subject header could look like
"Re: SV: Re: AW: Re: AW: topic".

The brillig solution was to have OE strip out any string of letters
followed by a colon which appears at the beginning of the Subject,
and just replace it with "Re:" (or "AW:" or "SV:", &c).
and how to correct this?

Get a decent newsreader or learn to put the OT back in the Subject
every time you reply to a post marked "OT:".
What about Re: why doesn't it strip that colon?

It is stripped and replaced with a fresh "Re:"

Your question is very unclear. If you mean to ask about
RITLabs' The Bat!, my comments are that it's not a newsreader
and that it's not freeware.

sorry.. saw this but I didnt have time to test it .. too many things going
on at the same time.. I was refering to this
http://www.ritlabs.com but as far as I can see now it only does email and
not news

There seems to be a rumor going around that MS is in negotiations with
certain freeware newsreader authors.

Or in the version after that or the one after that. There's no hurry;
I think these bugs have only been around eight years or so.
