You either need to use one that does or use groups.google for the older stuff.
I prefer groups.google myself, essentially because it goes back forever.

Three months is a long time. Just depends on your news server. If
it's the same as mine, that might be it. Otherwise it would depend
on your newsreader settings.
If you want to read really old posts, look them up on Google Groups.
In addition to the other suggestions you've received, you could also run
a local server like hamster. It will pull down posts in the background
and keep them in a local spool, and you can then read *that* with your
news client (as you now read your external feed(s) -- and have as much
retention as you configure on hamster.
