In order to get "good" pictures from my scans, I'm going to break down and
get a color profile system. Which would you recommend - the Colorvision
Spyder with Photocal ($140 @ B&H) or the Monaco OPTIX ($150 @ B&H) ?

Gretag MacBeth - EyeOne is the cheapest monitor calibrator they have.

Which of the two I mentioned would you recommend?

If I had to pick one of those it wouldn't be colorvision ;-)

Search Google Groups for "nikita eyeone" and you'll find two very
detailed answers regarding cheap profiling solutions. Should be
enough to help you make a decision. I should add that I have yet to
see a recommendation to *avoid* GretagMacbeth, even at the low
end--they seem to offer superior performance and just happen to charge
more along the way.

Also, there's now an EyeOne2 that GM is promoting for LCD use. I
don't know if it's the "best"...maybe we should wish Nikita some more
rainy weather so we can find out. :)

Thanks for the reference to the previous discussions. Nikita's remarks
basically echo the results of comparisons I've found on the web. Alas, the
Gretag system is a tad out of my price range.
