I don't know if this is old news or not, and I don't see this feature
mentioned on the Metapad website, but I find that Metapad can view
(render) RTF with all the formatting (fonts, colors, etc). I haven't
tried an RTF file with any images embedded so I don't know about that.

I came across this by accident (I have Metapad in my send-to) when I
wanted to see the RTF formatting codes in a file. To my surprise it
viewed the file just like Wordpad would.

Same here. I was delighted one day when a file popped up with perfect RTF
attributes. With all the excellent editors out there, MetaPad is still my
default Notepad (and Wordpad!) replacement.

It's great, but in my version of Metapad I have to use the "all files" option
to view rtf files (not "all file types"), and I always get the message that
it's not a valid text file. When I click that message off, the document opens
in fine shape.
Do I need a newer version of MP, or is this just the way it is? I have Windows
98.

Metapad 3.5 is the latest version, so if that's what you're using...
Metapad is meant to view/write plain text files so you're getting the
warning because RTF files are part binary. Metapad defaults to opening
text files with File > Open. You can put Metapad in your Send To right-
click context menu for all types of files and that will send the file
to Metapad directly. I use this method to check the headers of image
files (for example, to see if the string JFIF exists in a JPEG's
header).
