OT: Mail Alerter

Hi guys

Wonder if someone can help me please, i am looking for a couple of programs
for my PC to help me with important dates and a mail notifier, i am
terrible for remembering stuff and want something that will pop up in the
morning when i switch my pc on to tell me i have an important appointment or
birthday or stuff like that and i need something that will pop up and tell
me when i have an email even though i haven't got outlook express open.

Is there something out there to do this or a link someone can direct me to

would be grateful
