OT: List of software that must install from CD?

This is off topic here, but I can't think of anywhere that would be more
relevant, and I figure that enough folks might be interested in this...

I've got MANY programs which came on CD. I'm always trying to find my CD's
and I'm always worried about scratching them when handling.

With hard drives being so cheap, I'd like to copy the program disks to a
removeable hard drive. The problem is that some software will only install
from it's original media, some will install from an image copy, and some
software can be a simple file copy.

Does anyone know of a list online showing what software MUST be installed
from the orignal media? How about any ISO/image of the CD? What software can
I simply copy to a folder on the hard drive?

You realize , of course, that there are literally tens of thousands of
programs that install from CD in hundreds of subject areas?
And you think there's a list out there...

For once I happen to agree with DaveW, there's no way to
make a list of that magnitude. Better would be a targeted
list, after you've already tried moving files to HDD and
installing, if that doesn't work then try mounting ISOs,
then if that doesn't work hunt for a No-CD crack (for
games), otherwise it'll be easier (or even necessary) to
supply the original CD as needed.

Most games have to have the cd in the drive. The aforementioned noCD
cracks often make it dificult to play online.

You have two options...

you can use "virtual cd" software that will assign the software a virtual
drive letter

or you can store the cd's as .iso images and just reburn a new cd when
needed

disk.

Most games require the CD

Thanks guys... I was just hoping that someone may have put up a public
database or something that folks could add to. Might do something like this
myself sometime.
