It is time to replace my laptop and I want to future proof it as much as
possible.

My current spec is 4Gb Ram and 1400x1040 screen.
It will be used primarily for software development, but one app I am working
on handles a few***very*** large byte arrays.

Apparently Dell do not do any laptops that go past 4Gb Ram so does anyone
have any suggestions?

Obviously it would need a 64 bit processor, widescreen is not a requirement,
total pixel count and RAM capacity are what I am looking for.

I don't know of any laptops that come with more than 4GB. Have you
considered buying a desktop?

A bit of a hole in the market then!
I need a laptop as I work away from home most of the time so I need the
portability!

The chance that you actually need more than 4 GB of memory is vanishingly
small, unless you're test-driving some database server software or working
with rainbow tables and need the results *fast*.

At this point, investing in better software may be wiser than trying to find
a laptop that rivals a mainframe.

Laptops are never as powerful as desktops; they probably about 1 generation
behind. That is the cost of having a laptop -- they have to cram the same
amount of stuff in a lot smaller space.

I agree with Jeroen. I'm running SQLServer2005, VS2008, and a multitude of
other things simultaneously on my 4GB dual core laptop, and find it
definitely runs fast enough.

Good luck.
