Hi,

Sorry for the off-topic question, but I don't really know where to look for
this info. (I searched for various terms on Google, but couldn't find
anything that really gave me an answer).

I have a pc with a 6GB hard drive. I just installed (physically) a 40GB
Maxtor drive, but it wasn't recognised when booting up. My IDE bus speed is
100MHz, but the new hard drive has a bus speed of 133MHz. I've been told
that the bus speed is not the cause of the problem...that the new hard drive
should be compatible with the IDE bus speed. I've been further told that the
problem is most likely that the BIOS needs updating. Does this sound right?
I want to be sure about this before attempting to upgrade the BIOS as I
consider it to be a high-risk solution.

Thanks,

Adrian

If it was NOT recognized at ALL by the BIOS then you most likely did not
install it correctly. in other words cable connections, jumper settings,
BIOS setting for the IDE connection is not set up right. If the drive is
MISrecognized (wrong size) THEN you would probably be looking at a BIOS
upgrade. Carefully go over the installation instruction and pay careful
attention to the cable connections and jumper settings on the new drive
and any drive that is on the same cable. Also in the BIOS make sure that
the IDE header connection associated with the drives installed location
is enabled.
