Now I've been asked to recommend 1 program that will more or less handle the
imaging needs for a relatively new person in web design. I can't do it! I
can't recommend just one. They all have their pros and cons.
Please tell me which ones you use on a regular basis. You don't need to tell
me why... just how many and what they are, please.
Many of you know that I have written tutorials just for the folks here in
the FP news group ... that's why I get so many questions that don't begin in
the ng.
Here's a list of resources, if you're interested:

IMHO
There is no single image editor program that does everything well
(just like there is no single web development tool that is best)
Just look at the Adobe suite of editors and you will see why

It really depends on the user needs (what type of images and how creative) and the user skills (and comfort level w/ the product

I use about 4 image editors regularly because each has a unique capability (photos vs. graphics, file optimization / compression,
file conversion capability, speed of use, etc.)

For the beginner I would start with Image Composer. I would suggest Paint
Shop Pro as a secondary program if only for the optimization feature,
slicing capability & .gif quality.

Paint Shop Pro 7
Adobe Photoshop Elements 1.0

Both have upgrades available, but I haven't bothered looking into it.

A nifty little graphic utility is IrFanView. Not a graphics editor, really,
but a great tool for resizing, cropping, web format export, previewing. And
it's free:

I'd recommend PhotoImpact to a new user if they aren't intending on becoming
a nationally renowned graphic artist or single handed web-dev guru, because
it's so "windowsie". If the do have intentions of grandeur, I'd put them
right on a full bore Photoshop no matter how much it hurts, because that's
where they'll wind up in the end anyway.

Which 4, please?

PSP, Photoshop, Image Ready, Picture It
(plus IrfanViewer for the fast & "dirty" stuff)
