I'm always a little disappointed when I bring home some new software that I
paid for and it performs poorly, or not up to my expectations.

The 4 programs that I've installed and then uninstalled just because they
don't perform the up to the claims made for them:

Civilization II (have to have the CD in the hopper)

Nav 2003 (totally slow and update feature didn't work)

Microsoft Plus (needed more hardware, maybe will still install it later)

Money 2003 (sooooo, slow, even on XP)

Sigh!

I too have bought software that I later regretted.

Duke Nukem (never got around to learning all the rules)

Microsoft Plus (don't bother with the hardware upgrades just so you can use
this product. It aint worth it)

True Image (takes too long to make a disk image)

Roxio's CD Creator 5 (what a mess! I went back to using Sony CD Extreme)

I had a few - put them on ebay and got back at least part of what I paid

I always try VERY hard not to buy something unless I need it for work,
in which case I can write it off as a business expense -- and even then,
I look for it on half.com or Ebay or someplace like that first. But I
am making a hobby of downloading and trying freeware. I don't even try
shareware because I don't want to be tempted to keep it and not use it.

something does not mean that it is good or worthwhile. This newsgroup will
point you to freeware much of which is superior to payware. At least 75% of
the software on my system is freeware.

Your next choice is shareware. Almost all shareware programs let you try
them out for a period of time before you pay for them.

If you must purchase something based on claims be sure to read the system
requirements printed on the outside of the packaging.

As for your game, there is free software available that can copy it to your
hard drive and run it from there, But unless you have an ancient slow speed
drive why bother? If it takes a little longer to play the game you will
enjoy it that much longer!

As for Money, who cares! I use Quicken and I will not tell you that is
faster or slower than Money. I will tell you that it gets the job done and
if there is anything that I don't want to rush it's paying my bills and
keeping my bank account in good order.

Slow down guy! Life is not an emergency!!!

Wisdom from an old fart.

There's plenty of junk out there for sale amongst the good stuff. The
same can be said for freeware, but with the latter, disappointment
doesn't cost dollars. ;-)

I saw a report once that estimated the amounts wasted on software by
(US) government departments. The figures were staggering, even moreso
when it appears that much of the "redundant" stuff never even got as far
as being installed. What amazed me most, being "in the game", is the
amount of purpose-built software that was scrapped, written off etc.
This is a great way to waste taxpayer money IMHO.

....Especially from computer magazines. But the worst experience has
to be when I ugraded from AVG6 Free to Pro. When they upgraded the
program to version 7 earlier this year, they never bothered to send me
my new serial number, despite having registered immediately upon
purchase, over a year ago. After four unanswered inquiries, I have
switched to !Avast Free, which is a much better designed and working
application. AVG7 is a piece of trash and so is the staff.

It is a problem; I've had several shareware apps, which I won't bother you
with, but registered and been happy with.

Then along comes freeware that is much better....

The agony of uninstalling something I've paid good money for.....

snip

Extreme Movie Manager - $10.00
Not bad
replaced by:
Ant Movie Catalog - Freeware
Much better

That said, I still can't live without a few OT programs.
1. file manager
2. proprietary compression program
3. other $ware that came with CD Burner

My wife bought "Who wants to be a millionaire" for $5. Without
my prior knowledge or permission, it upgraded my DirectX to 7.0.
I was pleasantly surprised when it did not wreck my system. She
played the game twice. I was afraid to uninstall it for fear it
would try to remove DX7 and wreck my system. The auto upgrade
part of this game did not make me a happy camper and have never
bought another game.

I bought NAV6 AV at Sam's for $9. Crashed my system on a regular
basis. I discovered ACF shortly after this. I now investigate
potential $W VERY thoroughly prior to purchase and only after all
possibilities of FW are exhausted. I just checked my 'free' launcher
and see 16 freeware and 2 shareware.

You really should update your system, current version of DirectX
is 9.0b and it adds _significant_ performance increase when you
compare it to very old versions.

That old 300mhz and the Millionaire has been replaced. Upgraded to
9.0b recently due to vulnerability.

My other new computer is using 8.1. For comparison/safety reasons
I never update both computers at the same time.

I try ALL software before I buy, be it shareware or full commercial
apps, for exactly that reason.

Nav 2003 (totally slow and update feature didn't work)
I am using Nav 2003 on Win 2K and have no problems with the update. In
fact you can't even tell when it is updating itself until it is over
and you get a little box that says update is complete. It is done
automatically when you log onto the net.
