OT... Help with scanning documents

Can an A4 size document consisting of table of appointments be scanned and
opened in a word editor and edited?.I want to scan such a document open it
in word and edit the contents , but am unable to do so.The scanner only
saves as picture files and microsoft word (as far as i can tell) can only
insert the scanned document as a picture which is not what i want..Is there
some programme that can help me accomplish this?

Do a google search on Optical Character Recognition or OCR for short.
