OT: Help on buying DVD burner...

I am going to buy a DVD burner and would like your input on what to
look for and what I should avoid when considering one. I don't have a
lot of money that I can afford to spend on one, so I wanted to keep it
under $150 if possible. Also, which is a good brand to stick with and
are there any to avoid at all costs?

Lastly, I want to do some video editing, copying parts off VHS tapes I
have accumulated over the years (mostly piano performances,cutting out
all the commentary and just making a disc of the actual playing). I
have only a 30 gig HD right now, but I am going to add a second one.
What gig size would you suggest would be appropriate for this? 100/200
gig? or less?

I have a Gateway machine, Pentium 4, 1.8, with 1024 installed memory.

HP makes quality DVD/RW drives.

From that last statement, I assume that you're looking for an internal DVD
burner.

Two years ago, I bought myself the NEC ND-3500A for $74 from Newegg.
A year later, I bought my daughter an NEC ND-3550A drive for $40.
So your $150 target is EASY to beat.

Both of these were "OEM" units, meaning:
- No instructions ... but all you need to know is how to the unit in with
4 screws.
- No software ... but I already had Nero.
- No cables ... but both computers already had an extra power connector
and an extra IDE connector, so I didn't need cables.

We've had good luck with both NEC units. No failures so far. And they can
burn at 16x speed using 8x disks (certain brands). I like to stick with TY
brand.
