Anyone got suggestions for which should be faster on a Core Duo machine? Do
the optimisatiions for new hardware/processors mean Vista should be the
better option OR does the streamlined XP win over the bloated Vista??

Would be interested on peoples views and experiences!

At the moment it'll probably run faster on XP, when nVidia and ATI's drivers
get more mature it'll catch up, but I doubt it'll surpass XP.

Personally I can't tell the difference between games on XP and Vista, so
it's probably less than 10% different at the moment.

However, to get the most out of FSX you'll need Vista and a DirectX 10 video
card.

Thanks, I had thought as much and was going to try on XP and see how it
compares. I did read somewhere that you cannot install it more than twice
and activate so I could have issues should I have a problem and need to
reinstall.

Guess we'll have to see about DirectX10 and what is supported. Will cards
like the ATI X1400/1600 in laptops make the cut or are we looking at only
cutting edge technology released around the time of DX10 being compatible?

Thanks again

Installing on the same system shouldn't cause a problem. Activation should
just go through the internet each time. If you change a one or two pieces
of hardware again, it shouldn't require phoning them up. The activation
count does get reset after X amount of time (I'm not sure how long) but XP
is something like 180 days, so I'd imagine it would be similar with FS.

You'll need new hardware. No cards on the market are DX10 yet.

Not that it means a lot here but I was in the Beta program for FSX and I read
numerous times that Vista/DX10 will not bring any performance benefits but
rather certain graphical enhancements will be unlocked with a patch that the
ACES team will release for FSX. No one knows when that patch will be released
but my guess is it will be close to the release date of Vista for the general
public, i.e. Jan 2007.

I think you can almost be sure that you'll get the most performance out of
FSX with XP, but you'll get the most graphical enhancements (eye candy) with
DX10 (Vista).

Of course, none of this is for sure as DX10 hardware is just now starting to
trickle down the line. Once the testing starts and the DX10 patch for FSX
gets released, obviously we'll know more then.
