Not all CD-RW drives like the new highly protected discs, but seeing that
you have a liteon you might try a firmware upgrade.
Fixed a few problems with my DVD-RW drive from that company.

Yes, I have had some disks that won't be read, or are very slow to read on
some drives, but I have a CD/RW and a DVD-ROM, so if one doesn't read it the
other will - not always related to CD protections btw.

Is anyone having problems installing Far Cry? I have a brand new
system and my CD-RW refuses to see anything on the disk. When I try
my wife's laptop everything works great but nothing shows up at all
on mine. This is a new system with all the latest drivers and
firmware updates:

AMD ATHLON 64 3500+
ASUS A8V DLX
ATI 9500 PRO
2 - KINGSTON KVR400X64C3AK2/1G 2X512MB (MATCH PAIR) PC3200
LITE_ON LTR-52246S 52x24x52x CDRW

You don't by any chance have the DVD version? ;-)

unfortunately I've upgraded to the latest firmware... I guess I'll have
to find a cheap DVD drive and try that.

LOL! Nope it's definately the CD-ROM version, though that was the first
thing I thought of when I tried it. Apparently it's my CD/RW drive
that's the problem... well actually it's apparently the fact that the
new copy protection on Far Cry that doesn't like some CD/RW drives.

well I built the system myself so I can't really call anyone and the
drive's worked perfectly on every thing else I've tried. I guess I'll
just toss Far Cry.

Isn't copy protection just lovely.

The really amusing things is after having to find an old cdrom drive
to read the install CD I imaged them onto my hard drive with
virtualCD, and can now play without the CDs. So much for copy
protection.

It seems to me that all copy protection does is annoy the general
public when it doesn't confirm to the required book standard.

Get that cheap DVD drive you mentioned. You might have the same issues with
other new games (HL2 Doom3 etc) and Far Cry is too good to just toss. Shaun

To hell with their copy protection. Just download a no-cd crack.

I think copy protection that breaks standards should be banned...

You buy a game, you open it up, but the copy protection prevents you from
even reading the disc... but you've opened it, so you can't return it (in
most cases). Appalling.

Did you try disabling any anti virus software you have installed? I
have several games that don't install unless I disable McAfee anti
virus before I even insert the CD.
