How do I disable special function buttons on my keyboard? They are
"conveniently" placed between cursors and text buttons and next to enter and
I already see they will cause me a great deal of pain.

I use some freeware program to disable windows key, and it works perfectly.
I can upload it to you if you want. If you don't find any freeware (and I
don't think there is any) to disable special function buttons, consider
payware "I hate this key"

You can use the "filter keys" option in Control Panel>Accessibility Options
to tell Windows to ignore quick strokes on control keys. In other words, it
won't respond unless you hold the keys down. This eliminates the annoying
effects of accidentally hitting control keys whan typing.

Does your keyboard have a "Fn" key?

On many keyboards the keys you listed are not active unless the "Fn" key
is pressed first.

No Fn key, it's standard keyboard. And they are very much active, I checked
:(

In "Control Panel" you will find "Power Options" maybe one of the
"Advanced" settings will suit your needs.

Perhaps by using this app (I haven't tried it):

Program: OkayKeybees
Author: (Jackass JoeJoe)
Install: (n.i.)
Ware: (Freeware) (open source)

OkayKeybees is a freeware keyboard remapper with a twist. You define
what keys are always replaced or what keys are replaced only when a user
defined modifier key is held. You can effectively "move" keys to either
side of the keyboard or even effective disable keys (like the Windows key).

No installation program is needed.

OkayKeybees v1.0.2 [400 KB]
Requires a Windows OS. Untesed on Win9x, so your milleage may very.

Hi Fran,

AutoHotkey can do this. You just need to assign the shutdown / standby
key to do nothing.
