OT- Dial-up with IE7 and OE?

Bill in Co.

Before someone tells me this is a bit off topic here, I know that. But I
looked through the MS Internet Explorer group, and couldn't find a related
post, and there is no group for OE directly related to IE7, so I'm asking
here. It's just a simple question, for any users of IE7 (and OE), using
dial-up (like I am):

After going to IE7 and still using OE to read mail, when I close OE, it now
prompts for disconnecting (the auto-disconnect thing), which it never used
to do in IE6, UNTIL I closed IE, too. Apparently the only other
alternative using IE7 is to disable the auto disconnect entirely, in which
case after closing OE and then IE one must manually disconnect each time,
which is also a nuisance.

Is this behavior just unique to my IE7, or did something change? And it
happens with or without SP3 (already tried that).

What would be nice is to have it the way it was before with IE6 (which I've
gone back to for the time being). Specifically, when I close OE, there are
no auto disconnect prompts UNTIL I later close IE, just as it should be!!
Otherwise it's a nuisance. Thanks in advance for anyone else's
observations on this.

As OE shares IE's Connections settings, IE General newsgroup would have been
appropriate, Bill.

IE Tools | Internet Options | Connections | [highlight/select dial-up
connection] | Settings | Dial-up Settings | Advanced | Neither of the
options at the bottom should be checked/enabled.

You may also want to check your settings in OE Tools | Accounts | Mail |
[account(s)] | Properties | Connection | Hang up after... (disable/uncheck)

Well, maybe I should post it in there. But since I'm here, I'll just add
this: my settings in that regard were the same in IE6 and IE7, so I don't
think that's it.

To summarize, I want auto-disconnect to ONLY work when I close IE, NOT when
I close OE, and I think that has changed in IE7, so you can't do it anymore.
IOW, either you have auto-disconnect enabled for both OE and IE, or for
none. Know what I mean? It doesn't have to work that way in IE6,
fortunately. So I was just wondering if it worked that way for anyone
else. But I guess I'll probably have to subscribe to that other newsgroup,
too (I'm on dialup). Thanks.

I have an Aunty who is still on dial-up with Orange, ...and across past
years one becomes aware of some of the quirks in Windows dialup connection
settings. The most annoying being the (user account) password dropping out
whenever a change is made to a "dial-up connection" 's properties !
....usually indicated by a "radio button" dot changing position from "Me
Only" to "Anyone that uses this computer" !!

Anyhow ...on to your problem,
Have you looked at IE6 | Tools | Options | Connection tab | "Hang up after
sending and receiving" ...to make sure that its' not ticked ?

regards, Richard

When you have a question, you don't look for related posts in a newsgroup,
you create your own..

Guess it one of those different strokes/folks things. I'm still on dial-up
(rural area). Not sure about OE for mail as I've used 2K and 2003 Outlook
for sometime for that. Was IE6, now IE 7. My connects/disconnects are
strictly manual all the time. I use the latest OE for newsgroup reading
sourced from genuine news servers.

Why?

Because I asked you politely to do so? Because it's a thread about the same
problem in a more-appropriate newsgroup?

I didn't say you had to access the thread or newsgroup via Google Groups or
any other web-interface, the link was merely a convenient reference to the
thread for everyone concerned (including those who do use a web-interface).

You'll find the thread soon enough after clicking on this link & downloading
at least 1,000 headers:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

I'm on dial-up also and with Vista and IE8, but don't experience any
problems with my Windows Live Mail, probably because I don't use
auto-settings for my connection.
