I read this article, and I'm still confused. Is it possible to bully
someone in cyber-space?

Are kids today more sensitive than they used to be? It's hard for me to
imagine how someone could feel bullied over cyber-space. I mean, at worst,
the bully is nowhere near you, so what's the big deal here? -Dave

It's off topic, as you admit. Why do you think it's OK to
post it here??? Please find a more appropriate forum.

So? You in charge here or something?

Mike. I see it all the time, and I deal with it
when it happens. Mostly I shut the chat rooms
down. I filter against it, and NOBODY uses
these systems to intimidate others. The
proxy filter I use is called an iPrism. It does
exactly what is needed in a school environment,
and I highly recommend it. In addition, I use
Postini which can filter email for profanity,
porn, and individuals who are no longer
allowed on this lan. I am a firm believer in
tight control of the internet regards abusive
and destructive communication. That is as
much a part of building a computer as anything
else. Most of us have kids, or are responsible
for kids on these systems. I won't build an
uncontrolled rogue box. At a minimum, I really
like the McAfee Security Suit for blocking the
poop out here.

Johns,

I'm going to cut you some slack here as you have posted signal in the past.
That being said, USENET is not a chat room and no one is in charge. That
includes (thankfully) netkops that would like only their viewpoint
represented. Not only is this group part of USENET, it is also part of the
alt hierarchy of USENET which is the most anarchic of the groupings. It is
self-policed well enough to be functional, and is not in need of further
restrictions. Myself, I prefer to avoid any abusive conversations and try
to keep my posts readable by even the most prudish of readers (though I
admit have failed on occasion), but I have no desire to impose my writing
style on anyone else. If the mores and morals of USENET do not meet with
your approval then your communications would be best served by not
participating and stick with web site forums and chat rooms. You will not
be successful in changing USENET to meet with your approval, and only become
extremely frustrated in your attempts.

Cheers,
Don Freeman

Yep, I've seen it happen a bit.
Are kids today more sensitive than they used to be?

Nope, but its easier to bully anonymously than in person,
much less chance of getting physically attacked etc.
It's hard for me to imagine how someone could feel bullied over cyber-space.

Then why do you not use your real name when posting ?
I mean, at worst, the bully is nowhere near you,

That isnt necessarily true, particularly when kids do it to each other.
so what's the big deal here?

Same deal as the more traditional bullying.

I don't care about usenet. Usenet is for gurus. I do
care about these stinking chat rooms, that are run
for $$$$ by creeps who could care less what happens
to the kids. I do monitor and control what goes on
there, and I slam it shut if I don't like what I see.
In particular, home-builders are not very savy when
it comes to protecting their kids. These boxes we
are building are right in that catagory, and I am getting
to be an expert in this business of security in a
home environment. I think Mikes post is spot-on
to the needs of this group. An insecure computer
that exposes a child to insult and danger is just
as broke as a bad hard drive ... worse even.
Amature builders are always the first to try the
latest and greatest. That makes us the first to
see the good and the bad, and we know about it.
You would be amazed at what so-called experts
in the industry don't know about these systems.
Security is a great big hardware deal .. even in
setting up a simple home wireless router. I'm
taking a course in wireless networking at home
right now ( CNET ). All we talk about is security
.... and router firewalls .. 9 pages of posts from
all over the world in one day.

Let me guess, your name around the office is: The guy who gets the donuts

I see how it could be a problem. I've been a bit of a cyber-bully
myself, except I haven't picked on kids and I didn't really want to be
a bully so much as to whip up a good old flame war. I've got a
conscience, and eventually I realized some of my jibes were cutting
deeper than I wanted, so I have given up the practice.

I have noticed that open IRC channels tend to have ops who use any
excuse to ban newcomers. I don't give a shit if I get banned from 100
channels in the same day, but I can see how a kid would feel bad if
he/she were exposed to some of the treatment I've gotten on IRC.

Google "promise keepers" (inside text) in rec.pets.dogs.behavior...
not meant to ruin anyone's day, but oh boy, did it ever. The poor guy
was dealing with a lot of stress, whereas I was just being a smartass.
If an adult can get so upset with my commentary as to email me a death
threat, then it's not too hard to see how a kid would get upset if
half a dozen other kids started flaming him/her and sending hostile
email.

First of all, Usenet is for everyone, not just experts ('guru' and 'god' are
entirely inappropriate and condescending labels). Yes, there are "bullies"
everywhere, especially in anonymous forums like this where weaklings and cowards
will insult and degrade simply because they can. That's the kind of world we
live in. It's ugly, and full of ugly, evil people. And online forums are
entirely anarchical: no one is going to judge who is out-of-line or who is being
unfair or who is right or wrong. Engaging in an acrimonious debate online,
therefore, is a sucker's game. The moron will always win because he will stoop
to a level that good people are not willing to go. He will enjoy heaping abuse
on others, lying, and being nasty. Yes, there are these kind of people in the
world. Children may not yet know this, and should not have to deal with it, so
they need to be protected from it (the parent's duty). For the rest of us (with
a decent newsreader), just press delete and the moron will cease to exist. I
call it capital punishment.

Why is it every time you are caught making stupid comments, the best you can
do is to try and pretend you were trolling and caught everyone out. You're
not that good.

No, but overbearing governments are always ready to take up the
slack even if it doesn't exist.
Are kids today more sensitive than they used to be?

Not most of the kids I do instant messaging with. I'd say most are
ordinary human beings.

For that reason, it's a great place to practice civility for those
of us who are tactfully challenged.

There's nothing wrong IMO with that post about the Internet since
it's properly label. That beginning with "OT" is about the best
format for an off-topic post. If you are offended, don't read posts
that begin with "OT". There's lots worse to complain about.
