What compression format is brings the file size down to its smallest
possible size?

You shouldn't crosspost so blatantly, especially to unrelated newsgroups
like this one, alt.games.battlefield1942 . I would say RAR has the best
compression, consistantly.

For what? Are you actively compressing still pictures, video, or
sound, or just text files and such?

Why not download and try a few comressors, such as Winczip and Win RAR
and others.

Note that video/audio/pictures that already are comressed iwith their
own formats (Jpeg, MPEG, MP3), with not compress much with outside
compression systems.

Lots of factors influence this. It the file text, music, pictures, video,
programs, ??? If music/video/graphics, does it have to be lossless? How
universal does it need to be?

Zip and its variations are good for most files. The latest 7zip, which is
free, is probably the best of that type so far, with rar being very good
but less popular.

There are the Mpeg and Jpeg families for audio, video, and pictures. Trade
offs of size, speed, and picture quality.

What are you compressing?

Actually there is, but even if there wasn't how does that make it ok to crosspost to multiple groups that have nothing even remotely
to do with the subject?

really cool. Its not the best, because then best one is in russian but it is
third to the best overall.
