Mrs. Kerchief

SInce I got so many answers to kindergarten-level questions about hard
drives here, is it all right to ask other elementary questions about
PCs? If not, just let me know and I won't come back.

This question is about tracing messages on the INternet. My textbook
says that a computer can have a permanently assigned static IP address
or a temporarily assigned dynamic IP address. If dial-up telephone
modem users are assigned dynamic IP addresses, how can their
identities be found out (that is, without the cooperation of the
server and/or subpoena of some government agency)?

Also, can wireless Ethernet be installed on a Pentium 1 and 2? (166
and 233 respectively.)

Thank you.

This isnt the place to really ask, More so because experts on these type of
questions probably dont sit in Storage news gropus.. Wireless interent can
be on virtually any computer, the software interface for the network
connections might prove to be the problem.

ISP's are required by law to maintain a certian level of record keeping (ie
what account gets assign'd what ip address). This is how the RIAA are able
to get peoples information. Take the ip & time to the isp and the isp can
provide the user for that time. It's good to keep in mind that the isp can
use this data as they wish so if you complain about spammers/DDOS attacks by
a specific IP then the ISP will have the ability to track those back.

for more on internet ip's go to www.arin.net ..
if you want to really go deep into some stuff then visit IETF www.ietf.org
and they hold the RFC Repository and that can give you really detailed info
on many things (proably mainly used by programmers, software devlopers and
debuggers)

I suggest you add the msnews server (msnews.microsoft.com). It is free and
requires no password. Then subscribe to any newsgroup of interest. Also
subscribe to any newsgroup that interests you under the EL server. It really
makes no sense to ask non-storage questions in a storage newsgroup. Once in
a while you will get an answer, but asking in the correct forum brings more
consistent results.
