I was the biggest fan of this site up until a few weeks ago. Then the
trolls came out to play en force, people (my self included) fell into
feeding them, and now I see so rather rude replies (still much
friendlier that SOME usenet groups) to some ver ybasic simple requests.

I know this in not a moderated NG, but still, where did everyone's
manners go?

I was going to reccommmend this NG to the I/T folks at my church, but I
am not so sure that is a good idea. They are not going to want to wade
through the crap to get to the gems.

I realize that this is just opening up the gates to a flood of flames,
but it pains me to see *adults* acting like kids. In public.

I'll tell you where the manners went...
out the window when parents declined to chastise and teach their kids
out the window as kids were left to amuse themselves while mothers left the
home to work etc.
out the window when governments tell you you cannot slap your kids
(obviously NOT beatings)
out the window when schools do not even teach the basics of respect for
others and their property
out the window when adults bend over backwards to make their precious
darlings feel like they can do no wrong. ( As in : No my Jimmy would not do
something like that!)
Out the window when kids look at the way adults conduct themselves whether
they be National leaders, church leaders, local leaders, film stars, pop
stars etc.
Out the window when kids were given the right to speak to adults in a cheeky
and even threatening way ( How dare you speak to Roger like that - he only
littered the sidewalk with a pizza box - big deal)

Come on folks, it is not hard to see where manners went. The kids today ask
"what the hell is 'manners'?
So is it any surprise that kids grow into adults with the same notion of
"don't you dare tell me what to do" attitude, instead of having some respect
for others.
I too will probably receive flames for this.....

We have those little pebble stones in the front garden.
The kids outside seem to think they are at Eastbourne or something.
I'm a 17st fairly fit, sarf Londoner.
As I went to my car I overheard one girl say "Lets play in the stones".
I said "DOT NOT PLAY IN THE STONES"
One little !"!$£$% replied "why not?" as if he had no concept of leaving
other peoples stuff alone. I was exasperated. "THEY ARE *MY* STONES!!."

"But why cant we play in them?" was the reply.

It doesnt look good having a full on argument with someone that weighs as
much as your arm! Luckily one of his siblings told him to shut up.

understand. Are you refering to other threads, or the *troll*
thread?

As you did (and we all do), people fall into feeding that.

Well, tell them you find this group very informative. But they have
to separate the wheat from the chaff. Make your concerns known, the
I/T folk can do the rest.

Children reflect what they see at home, so if you find a child with bad
manners, you'll probably also find a parent with bad manners.

Personally, I just get fed up the "holier than thou" attitude that is
pervasive of middle America. If you aren't God fearing, you're the
spawn of Satan.

In this thread was there any hint of "holier than thou" - if so I never saw
it. We are just stating plain facts. Or is there a ban on saying that good
manners have gone out the window. Or do we have to exhibit bad manners in
order to be accepted by people like you.

Why not just use your killfile, and shut up, like most of us, and AFAICS,
*all* the worthwhile ones

Personally, I get fed up with people who presume that all
middle America is God-fearing and/or that it is necessary to be such
to be polite.

This group is actually very tame as NGs go. I'd still
reccommend it to anyone interested in freeware. Just ignore or
killfile the posters you find offensive.

Personally I just think we are exposed to a much larger group of people
than we knew before the prevalent use of computers. There have always
been oafs and rude people around but most people left them alone and
didn't associate with them. These forums give a stage for these people
to get the attention they crave and they take advantage of it as long
as they can then go somewhere else when it dries up.

I have been around homeless, destitute, drug/alcohol dependant people
who have better manners than some in this group. That said, come over
to the alt.autos.toyota group and see what some of the trolls there are
like.

Now....I'm having a big problem with being told a group I follow and
participate in is somehow not worthy of your 'church people'.

That's a good point. I, too, wouldn't mind seeing people in general
exhibiting better manners, but on the other hand "church people" live in
the same world as the rest of us, and should learn to deal with it as we
all do.

I wouldn't worry about that; from my experience of *church* people, and
Gawd help me, I was a pastor once (and this is not a personal pop at El
Gee)going to church regularly gives you a mindset that distorts reality,
- specially about eyes and motes and beams.

Now if the blokes down the pub said the same thing, I'd worry.

And I'm not a usenet expert, but.. is El Gee's sig compliant?

I never said that. I said the I/T people at church. I could have said
my I/T
friends at Uni or my I/T friends at the club or anyplace for that
matter.

Point I was trying to make is that we seem to get far much into bad
behavior.
