Updates seem a lot smaller in terms of file size now, was something updated
to minimise the amount needed to download?

At least it seems to ; many of us remember the several times (sobig
and swen viruses) where AVG server(s) were overloaded by the update
downloads.

Yes, they've changed their process somehow. Updates are now
apparently only incremental - i.e., only new virus signatures are
being downloaded.

However, I notice now that, on my version at least (6.0.525), they
don't always update automatically after download. I have to minimize
back to the Taskbar and then open it again to get it to update. Very
strange. Not a problem, just odd.

Has anyone else had problems getting the latest upgrade? All I get is
either "This page unavailable" or just the top part of the page - not
the download link part.
