AOL will provide free access to its user-friendly connectivity software
interface, and email accounts for members who don't require dial-up
connections. New freeloaders will be welcomed with open arms, and there
is always room for the prodigal sons and daughters at the new freebie
table. If you are one of the millions that have bailed on AOL over the
past two years, AOL is allowing you to reactivate your dormant email
address. We can argue about the value of "@aol.com" as a desirable
handle (I'm happy with it), but we can probably all agree that AOL is
making a bold move in ripping out the turnstiles of its walled
community.

interesting article.

AOL wants to change its strategy and become an YAHOO like service...
since it did such a bad job with ISP providing...
we will have to see how things turn out.

It looks like the article was originally penned by The Motley Fool:
"Over the past year, AOL has been beefing up its AOL.com portal. It's
the right way to go, ..."

The Motley Fool approves ... that means they are doomed.

The principal criticism is: AOL will have to support themselves through
ads. This'll make things slower. Only the cheapest of cheapskates will
use it, and they're the ones least likely to buy anything based on
adverts. It's all a downhill spiral.

Let's see, I'm supposed to pay my cable or phone company for
high speed internet access and use free AOL software in conjunction
with that? Why would I want to do that?

I wonder how many of you guys are secret aol users or soon to be aol
users now that it's free? :-))

How about a pool on the result of your survey. Dibs on "0 secret aol
users" and "0 soon to be aol users".
