OT: Any LINUX Guru - linux red hat 9 start up error (please ignore non-linux guys)

Hi Guys,

I finally installed linux red hat 9 with many problems in my PC under
Microsoft Virtual PC 2004.

Finally it looked everything is working I rebooted the system and it Oked
every hardware except
the Eth 0 which I believe could be the Network card.

Anyways, now even before the log in screen I am getting the message:

"INIT: Id "x4" responding too fast: disabled for 5 minutes" and it is going
on and on.

Finally I pressed Cntl+c and got the log in screen, I could log in but again
it continues
bringing the same message again and again.

I have bought a brand new PC , Pentium 4. I don't know what is going wrong.
I have installed almost
all linux with all GUI GNOME, KDE etc. I am not a Linux newbe.

Any respond will be appreciated.

I would recommend doing a google search for compatibility issues.
Also, post your question in the alt. linux groups...they are generally
nOOb friendly ;)

I have successfully run SuSE 9.1 and to some extent Mandrake 10<not
listed as supported> w/ VMware Workstation. . < Not sure what Virtual
PC 2004 supports ? >
At any rate, I was in my local Library the other day and checked out
"Red Hat Linux 9 Bible " . It came w/ 3 OS install disk.
After 1 hr 15 min , installation was completed...whew.
During reboot it hangs just after "searching for new hardware..."
Still tinkering w/ different boot options as it is supported by VMware
Workstation 4.5.2....

Eth 0 is your Ethernet card.
Sounds like you are in an endless loop.
I would go to Google Groups > Advancved Groups Search >
Return only messages from the newsgroup: *Linux*
Then put your keywords in
If you don't find anything then go to the linux newsgroups with a log file
in hand if it has generated one as they might ask for one.

Good advice. Get the log file out of /var/spool/log. It's named messages.
Haven't a clue about how you would get it out of Windows since Linux doesn't
boot.

Error message doesn't sound like anything familiar-could it be from Virtual
PC?

Thanks Guys,

I will try to do a search on google again ... though i did a big one last
night and in vain ... this issue is actually from Linux not VPC.

By the way linux works means the installation is ok what I mean is if I
press Ctl-C I can get the log in and can log to the Linux but
just the xwindows is not working.

I am a newbie to linux though I included the *not* in the first email.

Can anyone please tell me (stupid 80yr old) how to get rid of them
partitions linux has done to a couple hard drives? I keep ending up with
half of my drive capacity

Never tried Virtual PC but:

If Virtual PC creates a disk image (like Bochs) you can do a new install of a
Linux on another virtual machine, then "install" the disk image on this new VM,
then mount it and access. But the entire process is complicated.

Try Ranish Partition Manager. IIRC http://www.ranish.com/part

Or there are other commercial software that you can use (hint: P....... M....),
but then it would be off-topic for this group.

Or use a Knoppix (sp?) Live-CD with qtparted.

Your X-Window Server is not configured correctly for your video card
most likely. When you installed, it probably detected the wrong
version of the card and wrote the config file wrong.

When you boot, enter "linux 3" to go to runlevel 3 (console mode),
then run the X Configuration utility and set it up to use your video
card and monitor.

I have Red Hat 7.3 and haven't used 9 yet, so I don't know which X
configuration utility they're using on that version. Check the
install manual on the Red Hat CD's for info on the X Server and manual
configuration of it.
