I was going to post the rant (in my signature below, FWIW), then
figured I should check around for a more appropriate group. Opened
the big non-binary group (soc.culture.china). Someone already had a
thread going with a similar title "Anybody From China?". According
to the consensus there, the answer is "No". Then I was going to ask
where all the "NIKE... JORDAN..." Google Groups spam comes from.
Looked around and noticed there isn't any Chinese Google Groups spam
in that group. Hmm.

Is anyone who posts from China reading this?
Have you ever heard of anyone who posts from China to a USENET
group?
Or is spam the only relationship Chinese Google Groups users have
with USENET?
Assuming the answer, why is that? Are ordinary Chinese people not
allowed Internet access? Does the Chinese government set up and
supervise spam rooms for USENET and hacker rooms for the open
Internet?
Many years ago, I had a strange conversation with someone who
claimed to be from China. They wanted to leave China, they had
sporadic Internet access, and it was like they were constantly
looking over their shoulder.
