Many thanks.

I intend to copy the updates necessary to my version of Win98 to CD-R
and store it with the original disk, just in case.

However, something that is not mentioned is whether all 149 or so
updates are really necessary. I did a fresh install on an old hard
drive and clicked on the update button in OE, and was informed I
needed 14 critical updates (carefully noted for later download on a
broadband connection). One or two were Active-X and one was IE, so
that cuts the list a bit.

Do the different releases have different critical updates?

Do you happen to know the (approximate) size of the total of all these
available updates? I'm presuming they'll all fit on one CD, but I'm
tossing up whether to ask someone with broadband to get them, or whether
to chance my hand at dialup at 2-3 K/s. I'm also wondering whether a
download manager like DLExpert, with resume feature, could be used with
the MS links.

See "You talkin' to me" thread. I use Freshdownload, but some of the
updates needed the default download.

Thanks POKO. You got some good responses to your query from MS... you
must be one of the lucky ones. ;-)
