(OT) Access Runtime

Like many here, I have been wanting a freeware substitute for MS Access. We
use Office XP on Win XP at work and I have OOo on Win 98 at home. After
reading some earlier messages about Access Runtime in this group, I decided
that maybe that would be good enough for me since I could make any changes
or create new databases at work, then I could use them at home. I thought I
would recap my experience just in case anyone else is interested in doing
the same.

I did several searches on Yahoo and downloaded several versions of Access
2002 (xp) Runtime install files. The first I tried (from wisebrick.com)
could not register some DLL files and the program would not work. I was
unable to register the files using regsvr32. I installed DCOM98 and MDAC
2.8 after reading that suggestion in a news group and tried again with the
same result.

Next I tried the install file from numisexpert.com and it finished without
an error message and asked me to restart. I restarted but the program was
not installed. Instead of trying it again, I tried the install file from
erplite.com/downloads.htm and it installed without any error messages. I
can boot my mdb files by double clicking them (there is no file/open
command), but I get an error message that the file cannot be found. The
error message is false since the file is actually loaded, but it is a pain
to get this message every time. I think the problem may have to do with
long file names.

I'm not sure where to go from here. I will try moving my files to a path
without long names and rename the files to short names as well. I will
probably just live with it the way it is if that doesn't work, but I may try
another install file I got from dvd-register.com. The core files appear to
be the same as the first one I tried so, I doubt it will work any better. I
would suspect my problems were due to Windows 98 and not the install files.

Sorry for the off topic post, but I just thought some others might be
interested in trying this since there is no good freeware alternative.

The MS Access runtime file's are not re-distributables, they are intended to
be installed with MS Access/MS Office only.

As for an alternative, I notice you mention OOo, am I to presume you mean
Open Office? (seems great for an MS Office replacement to me, but then, I
tend to avoid that sort of thing wherever possible anyway as I rarely have a
use for them)

If you only need to access tables and queries (I mean no forms, no
reports, ...) you can try this database manager:

I think you only need jet, mdac and vb redistributables.
It's in italian, but it's fairly easy to understand how it works.
