OS X clients with Win 2000 printers

I have a Windows 2000 network with HP laser printers that
are tied (via Ethernet cards) to each server (all the
servers are Windows. If I turnoff Mac Print services that
used to stop Macs from printing to these printers.
However now with OS X the Macs seem able to print to any
printer (even with Mac print services turned off). How
can I restrict printer access at the server level with OS
X clients?

Hi Bill!

You can't restrict access to a printer using a server if the client machines
aren't connecting through the server to begin with.

How are your Macs connecting to the printers? Via Rendezvous or via LPR? Or
are they using the server print queues still?

If they're connecting via Rendezvous, you can turn this feature off at the
printer.

Otherwise, you can try to take advantage of all the administrative features
your printers offer and attempt to lock out users from accessing information
at the printer to determine its IP address. Some printers offer password
protection, but this can be a pain.

If the users are still printing through the print queue, then you can take
"authorized" users and add them to a group and grant this group print
permissions while denying all others. This can be done on a per printer
basis.

IMHO, if users are abusing the use of the printers then this is a "people"
issue and not a technical issue.
