OS: Windows XP - Converter problems with Word 2002

I have an excellent computer which has Windows XP installed. From Day 1 I have consistently received "converter not installed" error messages when attempting to open docs in other formats that previously opened in Word without a hitch when Windows 98 was the OS. Please tell me there is some little box "somewhere" that can be checked to enable this conversion.
 
Do you have Word installed on this computer, is it a recent version of Word,
if yes to both have you tried removing and reinstalling Word as this is not
an XP issue, it is a Word issue regardless of when it worked or didn't work.
