Orphaned Domain Account

Hi, all,

I'm going to describe a few things which will cause many of you to
exclaim "YOU IDIOT." I know, I know. Would someone have mercy and
help anyway?

I have a laptop with XP Pro running on it. It was a member of a
Windows 2000 domain. I logged in with the domain account, whether or
not I was logged into the domain (e.g. working at home).

Unfortunately, the AD DC's hard drive died, with no BDC or RAID, and
the AD DC's backup failed to restore. The original server is
therefore.

I reconfigured a new AD DC with the same old server name and domain
name. Since I couldn't connect my laptop to that domain, I removed the
laptop from the domain and readded it. Oops! Even though I logged in
with the same DOMAIN\username, it was really a new domain, so a brand
new account was created. Now I can only log into the DOMAIN\username
account, and the old one is inaccessible. When I go to
ControlPanel->System->Advanced->User Profiles, the original profile is
listed as "Account Unknown", and the "CopyTo" button is disabled when
it is selected.

Is there anyway to do one or both of the following?
a) set up a new Active Directory server (either 2000 or 2003) so that
the domain has the same IDs as the old domain? (and the clients will
think they are logging into the old domain?)
b) barring a), rejigger my laptop so that I can log into the old,
orphaned account? This would allow me to save files, Outlook/Exchange
psts and osts (yes, the dead server was the Exchange server too; sigh),
settings, etc.

And yes, I should have been better prepared. I just need to know how
screwed I am before I proceed.

Thanks

Since you obviously can log on to the machine as a local admin, did you
attempt the profile copy while logged on as the admin? (the above
appears that you attempted this while logged on as your new
domain\username account?) You should be able to copy that profile,
while logged on as local admin, to overwrite the contents of the new
domain\username profile.

Won't chide you for the rest that is obvious... you have already
learned THAT lesson!
