Okay, I played with this a bit. If you turn off AutoLayout, you can drag a
subordinate up beside the top level and then manipulate the connector into
the right position. If you turn AutoLayout back on, everything will revert
to the way it's "supposed" to be--although actually the connectors do stay
connected and the hierarchical relationships are maintained; it's just that
the top person's co-worker's subordinates tend to end up at level 3 instead
of 2 (it would be handy if there were something like Outline View in which
you could assign levels using Promote/Demote). My first approach was to add
a layer of subordinates (with two on the second level) and then try to
delete the one person at the top, but you can't do that. <sigh>
