Hi there,

When I try to do an organization chart, I can not add a coworker at the *top
level*, this item is greyed out.

I posted in another forum but I am not too sure which Word forum to post
this question but here it is.

Thanks.

Why would you even do this in Word? Use Visio or other flowchart type software. Save yourself a lot of headache

It is a feature of Word and it seems to work just fine except that I can not
add a second person at the top.

Thanks.

Hi Louise,

It makes sense.. you cannot have more than one person at the top of the
pyramid... even Visio would not allow this without some serious manual
tampering. How do you link all the subordinates to the top two.... do all
subordinates really report to both superiors equally and indiscriminately?

If so, put the two names in the single box at the top.
or
In the top shape, write the department, service or company name.

If you want to really have two boxes at the top, you can try the following:

Create your chart;
Put one person at the top level;
Then 2 people at the next level (By default when you create it, there are 3
people at the second level, so delete one);
Finish building your chart;
Save!;
Now, careful because it can be difficult to go back - hence the "Save!"
above;
On the Org chart toolbar, in the Format Menu, uncheck Automatic formatting;
Distance the top shapes from the boxes at the second level;
Manually try to reroute all the links to get the desired look - this is the
difficult part!;
Make the lone top shape as much smaller than one of the new top shapes,
Place the old top shape behind one of the new top shapes to hide it (you
can't delete it);
Resize the Org chart area;
Save if you like what you see, otherwise trash it and start again!
Have a drink, you deserve it!

Have one for me too then!
I am alone with the kids tonight, so I can't have one!

I've described a slightly different method in
microsoft.public.word.newusers.
