Order of Icons in Windows Taskbar

Is there some way to change the order (left to right, for example) of the
icons on the Taskbar? I see shareware, etc., but would prefer just to see if
XP allows you to do it, or if there is a Microsoft-provided tool that would
allow one to do that.

It may sound a little goofy, but I have to have many app's open as I do tech
support and if I accidently close one that means (if I am to feed my
anal-retentiveness...) that I have to close multiple apps to make sure they
appear in the correct order.

Thanks!

No. As you say, there is third-party software (such as Taskarrange) that
provides this capability, but there's nothing in Windows itself.

Maybe TaskArrange will help you. Get it here:-

AFAIK it is freeware. I use it constantly.

It does not "remember" positions when you reboot and start up apps but
I keep a shortcut to it in the quick launch bar and it is only a few
clicks to open it and arrange positions of items in the taskbar.
