With open-source databases becoming increasingly popular, one of the biggest database developers, Oracle, has announced it's plans to create a free version of it's database. The move follows the building pressure from other providers of free database software, such as MySQL and IBM - even Microsoft has plans to release a free version of SQL Server 2005 in November.

This software is aimed at 'small-time users', such as small businesses, software vendors and students, since it will be a low-end version of the database. However, users with more than one processor, 4GB of disk memory and 1GB of memory will not be able to take advantage of this free softwarwe.

Oracle hopes to make itself popular among low-end users, with the ultimate aim that they will want to upgrade to high-end software.
