GX100 units, and I have 7 of them here, use PC100 RAM, and it's getting
hard to find any more. I think the limit is 512MB, but I've not seen
machines with more than 256MB in them in a couple years. It's not ECC.

ok because i was looking at the 4AllMemory website and they say sdram
so i take it they are the same

SDRAM is a generic type of RAM, normally 72PIN SDRAM, PC100 - the
important part is the 72PIN and PC100, PC133 will not work in the
machines.

Crucial.com states PC133, 256MB RAM for $77 each. Max of 512MB for
GX100. I could be confused, I was sure that PC100 was the only thing I
could get working in them, maybe it's a BIOS Update that we missed a
long time ago.

Anyway, these are 400Mhz machines that we have, with 256MB RAM, and they
still run well. I know for a fact I have PC100 in them, but if they will
take PC133 (as per Crucial.com) I will order a set and try it myself.

Sorry, it's 168 PIN memory, 72PIN was the old EDO/FPM memory.

The optiplex isn't very picky. Pc100 or PC-133 is OK, no requirement to
match sizes, brands, or even clocking (it's BETTER, if you do,
however). ECC OK, non ECC OK.

So, what are you running on it? I ask because there's quite a range of
processors that shipped with different Revisions. As low as Celeron
400, to as high as p3 866MHZ, as I've seen. And It's best to have the
ram clock, match the Bus speed of the CPU.

Just to add to the confusion, there is such a thing as EDO and FPM in
168 pin dimms. The FPM is 5v for old Macs, but EDO shipped either way.

And no, you can't put EDO dimms in the old Optiplex, but some even
older p1 and p2s accepted it.

I have sticks of 72pin FPM for PC's here, even a couple that use it.
Later, as things developed, you could get PC's that would use either FPM
or EDO.

Most of the later P1 and P2 systems accepted EDO.

I've seen more of the older Optiplex not run on PC133, although Crucial
claims they do, but, I would imagine a firmware update would give PC133
function.

i have the Celeron 400

how do i tell if the motherboard takes registered sdran 256mb.

I've never tried registered on those. It's usually more expensive,
unless you just happen to have them laying around.

I've done it, so I know it can be done. I Upgrade the BIOS on those
machines first thing before doing an OS install, so can't be certian.
But I know windows 2000 is way happer with the new bios upgrade.

You know, I was almost 100% certain they required PC100 RAM, as I have a
bunch of the Celeron 400 units myself, and I know I've tried to install
PC133 in them, but I've not checked for new firmware in more than 5
years. The Crucial.com website shows PC133, but I have a couple PC133
sticks that I tried in them and they will not work at all.

To be safe, I would stick with PC100, if you can still find it.
