Optimizing LIKE in SQL statements

What can be done on the SQLServer end of things to optimize the speed of Fill
methods that use LIKE within the SQL statement.
 
Check out the Query Analyzer and see the query plan for the LIKE variations
you're executing. For example, if you code
".... WHERE x LIKE 'y%' "
the QO might find that an index can quickly locate the row. On the other
hand if you code:
".... WHERE x LIKE '%y' "
the QO must do a rowscan--the indexes can't help.
