When using scanned or digital camera images what is the best size, resolution & format (.jpeg, .tiff) for use in Photo Story 2?

Use JPG, not TIF.
I would scan at 200dpi, take a look at it. Probably fine. Experiment with
anything between 100 and 300 dpi.
For digital camera, resolution of a 2 or 3 MP camera is plenty.
When you make the Photo Story file, using 6 to 8 images from a 3 MP camera,
adding some music and narration you will end with a file size of about 1 to
2 GB. This is pretty large if you are thinking of e-mailing this file. So,
in essence, depending on what you want to do with the file you can use
images of low or high resolution or skip on adding music and just add
narration.
If you already have your original files and you want to reduce the file size
for this project you can easily do this with Image Resizer and then select
the smaller files.

Go to this site and download the free Image Resizer. Exe file in one of your
folder.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Once in your folder, double click on it to install it.

Once installed, you right click on a photo file (or on a group of selected
photo files).

Click on Resize image on the opening menu.

A window will open, select the size you want.

New files will be added in your folder, same name as original file but with
the word (small) added.

The first time you use it, you may not see Resize image on the opening menu
after you right click on the file or if you see it, it may not work. If so,
do the following:

Click on Run, click on Start and type the following in the textbox:

REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL

and press the Enter key.

Note that there is a space between ...32 and SHI.

Also, you can download a free batch converter from here to resize pictures
and edit photos:

====================================
For each story, you can import up to 150 pictures,
which can be files with .bmp, .esp, .gif, .jpeg, .pcd,
..pcx, .png, .psd, .tga, and .tif file name extensions.

It is not necessary to resize images for use in
PhotoStory...the program does that automatically
....all you have to do is choose the size on the
Quality Settings screen. You can choose 640x480
or 320x240.

If you require larger images, there are free profiles
that can be downloaded from the following site:
(be sure your computer meets the system requirements)
