Hello,
I have created an and uploaded a .WMV file to my website.
Most broadband visitors can view the video, but none of my dial-up people
can?
Is there a way to either modify the existing file or re-create the file, so
that the file is more friendly toward slow-speed connection visitors? I am
using Movie Maker 2 on a Win XP Pro platform.
TIA

You may find using windows encoder 9 will give you lots more choices in
compression to get the file size down, but lots more practising to get the
levels correct.

Marshall,

You have two basic approaches.

MM2 creates individual files for file download from a server, so you would
need to make two different files for broadband and dial up users.

Or, as Graham says, use the Encoder. With it you can make a single file with
two different playback streams built into it... and then set it up on a
server that runs Windows Media streaming software. The server would detect
the client's capabilities and send out the appropriate stream. It's a bit
more complicated than two file download links on a file server.

Hi there,

It is now becoming quite important to find out what your provider
allows. Some for example will not allow any of your files to be more than
10MB, other will not allow the download of image files JPG, WMV and ASF's to
be greater than 50% of the total download from your site. Its all to do with
bandwidth and how they shave off the corners of their service so that it
appears you have a truly fast service. You only find these rules in the
small print. I know of one service provider who say they will automatically
debit your account for the increased usage (They upgrade you to the next
level of service they provide) So, read the small print first!!

The actual problem of what size etc...Movie Maker has a couple of
options for slow speed connections that provide a small picture, and of
course the sound is rather tinny...but you can only squeeze so much into a
pint pot. I gave up on catering for slow modems quite a while back, but all
of my family/friends are on broadband anyway.

Best Wishes.....John Kelly
