Optical Mouse losing connection

I'm using a USB Microsoft Optical mouse and also have a
USB Microsoft Keyboard. No other USB devices connected.
Using Windows XP and have a Intel 82371 AB/EB USB host
controller. Every now and then the Mouse loses connection
and then reconnects (accompanied by an extremely annoyed
single beep then double beep). Sometimes mouse will not
respond at all until it is unplugged and reconnected. Not
sure if this is a USB conflict or what. Any help would be
appreciated.

Open your Device Manager and right-click on your mouse.
Click on the Power Management tab and uncheck "Allow the computer
to turn off this device to save power". Place a checkmark next to
"Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby". Afterward,
click "OK".

Repeat this procedure for your keyboard.

To open Device Manager, right-click on MY COMPUTER and select:
Properties > Hardware (tab) > Device Manager
