Microsoft Optical mouse goes berserk intermittently. What can be the reason
? Same thing happens on USB as well as PS/2.

Anybody knows ?

Does it go beserk on another machine? If yes, maybe the mouse is flawed.
Check all the settings in the Mouse applet in the Control Panel. Maybe
turn off/on some of the settings, especially the "special" ones.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

hmmmmmmmm.. My crystal ball says that by "berserk" you mean that it seems to move to locations on the open window by itself without your input. Go into your mouse setup and uncheck the "smart move" option. Next time please describe what exactly the mouse is doing. My crystal ball is getting worn out and takes a long long time to recharge. Good luck.

What you guessed was correct.
I could not find the option " smart move " , but I disabled the option "
Precision control " . I will give it a try and come back again. Any ways,
thanks for the suggestion.

Same here, shoots to edge of screen sometimes.,
Probably a MS design feature.

I had exactly the same problem.
Solved it by replacing the mousepad with one having a more intricate
pattern than the original. (original mousepad was a Dell, FWIW).

Well I'm glad that I'm not the only one that has a MS Optical that
goes to the edge. When mine does I have to reset to get control of the
computer again. Finally gave up and went back to a regular mouse.

The problem seems to be solved. I " Unchecked" the option called fast
initialization. This option can be found in device
manager/mose/prperties.

Try doing it.
