Has anyone come across something like this? Installed a Lite-On iHAP 422
combination CD/DVD burner in my sister's computer. Unit was manufactured
late 2009 so as such it has the latest firmware.

Device reads all media just fine. Will burn DVD but balks on CD. Tried
several different brands of media all with the same non-working result.

I believe there are two lasers in a CD/DVD writable unit; one red for CD
burning and one blue for DVD burning. It's possible that the CD burning one
is not functioning correctly. You might try getting in touch with the
maker's support for further help.

Jan's right. If I had a dollar for every hour I've spent fracking with
bad optical drives....
Get yourself an RMA and send it back. You want a new one.

You might use a program like SIW (System Information for Windows) to verify
that the firmware in the drive is indeed the latest when compared to the LG
web site. A drive bought in 2009 might have been in a warehouse for quite a
while after being manufactured, while updates may have still been in the
works. You can download the latest freeware version of SIW at:
www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html

Another thing that can cause problems like this is if the driver that
Windows is using is not the latest as well, another thing to verify at the
LG web site.

Other than checking the above, I agree with the others, it sounds like RMA
time.
