optical dics drives don't recognise cds

my disc drives no longer recognise the type of cd in them. As in, when a put in a dvd it doesn't recognise it as a dvd. If i put in an audio cd it doesn't recognise it as an audio cd. This is only a problem because the dvds do not autoplay. Thankyou for ypour help,.
