Hi everybody:

We're going to migrate our servers and we're having doubts about migrate to
64 bits servers either with AMD Opteron or Xeon with 64 bits extensions.

I would like to know what's your opinion about it or perhaps do you
recommend me to buy 32 bits processors???

Thanks in advance

Eduardo

Easy question to answer: dual-core Opterons. You should check
out the early benchmarks at AnandTech and TechReport.

Their performance and power consumption advantages over Xeons are
simply too huge to ignore.

Intel is supposedly still over a year away from having dual-core
x86 server chips and until then they have no hope of competing
with the dual-core Opterons.

HP and Sun, plus many second tier OEMs, have starting selling
boxes with two or four Opteron 865, 870, or 875 (1.8, 2.0, 2.2
GHz respectively). If you want 2P systems, consider waiting for
the Opty 265, 270, 275 to be released in a few weeks instead of
paying more for the 8xx Opterons.

IBM also has some Opty dualies but I can't recall ever seeing a
quad in their Opty lineup.

Absolutely not. You might find you need to continue using your
current 32 software - including the OS - but at the very least
you want AMD64 processors so that you have the option of
upgrading to 64 bit software when you are ready to do so.

Thanks a lot Rob. You have help me a lot.
