I have to replace my old 7-year old scanner and am considering either a Microtek
ScanMaker s400 or a Canon CanoScan LiDE70. I would appreciate opinions or
recommendations. Thanks!

Well, right off, I'd shy away from any scanner that uses a CIS
(Contact Image Sensor), like the Canon model does. The Microtek uses
a CCD sensor, which I feel is much better. Any flatbed scanner that
has a very low profile, like the LiDE70 does, usually uses a CIS.
I've used both brands of scanners....I used to use Microteks, now
I use a Canon 9950F. The MicroTeks did a good job, but I had some
problems with them, mainly something on my computer was corrupting the
scanner software. I got tired of trying to find it, so I just bought
the Canon.
If you have a little extra money, I'd suggest the Canon 9950F
over the MicroTek, but if money is tight, and you need to choose
between the two you mentioned, I'd opt for the MicroTek.

Hi Talker,

Many thanks for your reply and suggestion. I had not physically seen the Canon
model until yesterday when I saw a demo at a local Staples. I could not believe
how small it was! My old Visioneer 8100 satisfied my needs perfectly until it
had a power adapter problem and, due to cost considerations, I'll probably go
with the Microtek. Thanks again!
