Looking for a new pc for a friend and found this on a website

3000+ Athlon XP 64
1.0GB DDR400
Gigabyte Geforce 6600GT (128mb) with Video In & out!
2 x SATA 80GB HDD
16x DVD-/+ RW

£730 without a monitor
£900 with a 17" (16ms)

what do you think?

Looks ok enough. Perhaps more HDD space, but that's a personal thing.
Some people need more, some less.

I'd change the 6600GT and take the X800XL(if the system is on a nForce 4
chipset,which btw.you didn't mention) or X800 vanilla.
My recommendation on a 17'' LCD is a Samsung 710T(12 ms).
 
Don't know what UK prices are like. If you had to buy the components
separately and assemble the PC yourself, does it come out to be cheaper?

It might, depends a bit on the quality of "common" components such as
case/psu, mouse/keyboard, soundcards, etc.
 
Given a pre-assembled PC, if no brand- or model names are given for some of
the generic components, assume the cheapest. :-)

There's stuff you shouldn't skimp on, like PSU and RAM, that'll make
upgrades a lot smoother down the road.
