Opinions on number of case fans...5 vs. 3?

I'm halfway through selecting parts for my first homebuilt and have
settled on the Kingwin KT-436 as the case of choice. Unfortunately, it
doesn't seem to be in stock anywhere. Another Kingwin model, the
KT-424, seems to be more widely available but is a little smaller and
has two fewer fans than the KT-436 (3 instead of 5).

Are 5 fans overkill? My rig will be heated by an Antec 480 PS, 3GHz P4
w/Zalman cooler, Radeon 9800 video, Audigy 2, 2 Seagate drives (RAID)
and another drive for backup, a Plextor DVD/RW, and an Abit IC7-G MB.

My current Dell I think has 1 fan and is very stable!

Thanks!

Yes.

Most PC case have placement for fans.
When you count out the CPU and the Power Supply, you should have two or
three other placement for two or more fans.

On a standard case you can put a fan in the front bottom hidden in the front
plastic case.
The other position where you may place one or two fans on the back, just
below the power supply.

Depending on the size you may add two on the back or juste one the same size
as the one that were in 200W AT power supply.

Some other case offers the possibility to put one fan on the side and maybe
on the top.

I must say that I did see a picture of a PC with 5 fans total on the system.
Juste to keep cool air flowing in the case.

You have to keep in mind that a few years back we could cook an egg on a
Intel 80486 DX and DX2. That was when the first fan and heatsincs came on
the market.

When you add fans to your system, be sure to keep in mind not to over extend
the limits of your power supply.

Take care
