Hi,

I'm after a new hard disk and was looking for opinions on whether
internal or external is the way to go. As I understand, USB2/Firewire
only gives 400/480 Mbits/sec which is likely to limit the most recent
hard disks. Is there much to recommend external hard drives, other than
the flexibility of being able to swap them around between machines with
ease?

Barry.

I use a USB2 external drive when I travel for storing/editing photos etc.
Saves hdd space on the laptop. It is small and easily stored. It is also
much faster than I had thought it would be.

My 80GB/7200RPM W/D internal drive benchmarks at 54MB/sec. The same test
for my 80GB/7200RPM W/D USB2 external drive shows 23MB/Sec. I use the USB
drive for weekly full backups of the other drive. It has saved me several
times!

An external drive is also handy for moving data between machines as well.
Moving applications or operating systems this way is a lot more
challenging.
