I am looking for a dependable hardware router/firewall for
a home DSL connection. The max that I am willing to pay
is around $125.00. I was looking at the Hotbrick SoHo 401.
Does anybody have any other suggestions? I am running
Windows 2000 with Norton Personall Firewall and I would
like the router/firewall not to be wireless. Thanks for
any suggestions.

I think they will all do a decent job. I don't think there are any "bad"
ones out there. About 80% to 90% of your security comes from NAT where you
would use Private Non-Routable IP#s in the private side of your network and
these aren't directly accessable from the Internet,...and *any* of these
devices are going to give you that,...even Windows Server with RRAS or even
the very basic ICS could do that.

Any other advacned filtering features are simply "icing on the cake" which
cover the remaining 10% to 20% of your security which still remains after
the fact that your addresses aren't compatible with the Internet to begin
with.

Hi Scott,

I bought my brother and myself the HotBrick SoHo 401 W. I have to say
that it's good for the price. I was looking at getting the Watchguard
firewalls for like $400-500. I like the 401 W because it supports
wireless g, it has a MAC Filter, NAT, stateful packet inspection, and
other features. You can filter by URL, and remote administer the
firewall. One problem that I have with it is that there isn't HTTPS
remote connections like the Linksys. I have the firewall configure,
along with a linksys router set up.
