Operation could not be completed

My computer just suddenly failed to print. I went into
the control panel and looked in printers and faxes.
Where there had once been two printers, there was now
none. I tried to add a printer and got the "Operation
could not be completed" message. Since then I have run 4
virus programs on my computer, attempted to get rid of a
blaster worm, (one that I guess I never had) I have
been in the "services msc" and tried to "start" the print
spooler as well as the RPC (I have no idea what I am
doing but those two things seem to be related) I have so
many important documents on my computer I can't face the
probability of having to reinstall windows, but I'm
losing hope. I've tried everything. Any suggestions?

If you have the capability to burn these files to cd-r's
I would recommend doing so. I'm working on a print problem
for one of my users right now. The most important thing
you can do is to make sure that you have a backup copy of
your files saved in another location (be it an external
hard drive, cd-r's, floppy disks, another computer, etc.).
This will protect you from losing all of those valuable
files. Better safe than sorry.

Now for the printer(s). What brand and model number of
printer and computer do you have? Is the printer usb or
parallel port? Did you upgrade to xp, or was it
pre-installed? All of this info would be helpful for any
tech who's trying to help you solve this problem.

Try the link I added below to one of microsoft's articles.
When you went into the setting for the print spooler, did
you set the spooler service to start automatically? After
doing this, have you restarted the computer? I hope this
helps. I'll check back tomorrow to see if you've had any
improvement.
Respectfully,
Kevin

Here's the link. copy the text below and paste it where
you normally type a web address and press enter. If that
doesn't work, do a search on microsoft's website for the
article number 314876

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that it is a parallel port
and Windows came pre-installed. Everything has been
working perfectly for two years. Thanks again.

im havin the same problem as well... with a lexmark z43
and i cant even get the wizard to work to try to
install .. VERY frusterating.. i just reinstalled window

Also this KB. If there are Lexmark drivers installed, this shows how to
disable the conflicting software. This is a lot of registry work to remove
all drivers and afterinstall print monitor software but it will get the
spooler back to a clean state.
